ROBBY the ROBOT
from "Forbidden Planet"

This was another piece I was hired to "refurbish" and re-engineer for another company's future reproduction.
I eventually re-planned the entire project to increase the profit potential and simplify mass-production. This group
also experienced money problems, scrapped the project and destroyed these pattern pieces before completion.

This is a picture of a test fit of the re-conditioned body components stacked up to see what the finished body would look like.
Next to it is a flipped version of the same picture so you don't have to stand on your head to get the proper perspective!

It is worth mentioning that the original sculptors decided to make the Head, Torso and Trunk out of stacked up
partical board
! Needless to say, the pieces weighed a ton! No telling what some people are thinking!

The Leg was sculpted out of styrofoam and since the clients refused to let us discard it, I and my partner for
the project Byron, coated it with a mixture of fiberglass resin and microballoons and smoothed it out. The second
Leg was to be partially constructed from a casting from the mold of the first Leg.

In addition to fixing what the previous sculptors had botched, I sculpted all of the components that make up the
interior and exterior details of the head. Some of these pieces had to be engineered to allow for back-lighting once
they were cast in resin. Other pieces also had to functon with cams and gears to reproduce the movement in Robby's
head when he's "thinking". Byron and I sculpted the Ear out of a styrofoam egg and cone! Then we sealed it with auto
body filler, molded it and cast two in resin. The other details were sculpted out of styrene and Sintra.

The original Arm we were provided with was terrible! The original sculptors actually tried to sculpt the
domed part and tube shape out of fiberglass-coated foam! We replaced the dome with the lid from a lettuce
storage bowl (of all things) and the arm with a large tube making the pieces symmetrical.

Gunstar 1
This model was designed to be reproduced as a
model kit and was engineered to be partly hollow.
Its over 100 pieces were sculpted from Sintra,
styrene and blocks of hardened auto body filler.

A great deal of time and effort went
into maintaining the highest level of
accuracy and detail. The "Death
Blossom" weapons port above
measures only 5/8 by 1 7/8 inches.

Kronos
I built this model of Kronos using acrylic
sheets, rods and a hemisphere. It now
resides in the Bob Burns collection.

Visitor Fighter
This model was sculpted out of
styrene and auto body filler. The base
was designed to reproduce the logo
from the show. I made it from a plastic
dish and hardened body filler.
Starman Ship
This model was sculpted out of hardened
auto body filler and acrylic hemispheres
with a layer of Sintra in the center.
Babylon 5 Station
This piece was created using PVC
tubing, sheet styrene and acrylic.

Martian War Machine
This repro of the ship from the 1950s
film "The War of the Worlds" was
sculpted from Sculpey for the main
body and "head" while the neck was
made from a square styrene tube.
This was the first thing I ever sculpted.
