This is how Tim sculpted the original pattern pieces for the Olympic Class Starship!
|
The secondary hull of the Olympic Class was constructed out of sheet styrene.
The grid lined were drawn on with pencil and then masked off with 1/64" wide tape strips. The windows were each hand-cut and placed onto the hull with an exacto knife.
When all of the panel lines, windows and other recessed details were masked off, Tim sprayed the entire surface with several coats of primer. When the primer was dry, the tape was removed resulting in recessed windows and other details. |

The primary hull started life as a plastic fishing bobber! Tim cut it down and re-shaped the top into layers, then drew out the grid pattern.
Like the secondary hull, 1/64" wide tape was used to mask off the windows and grid lines. Raised details, such as the life pods, were also glued on or cut from tape and left in place after the priming and tape removal process. |

The engines were constructed from square tubing and square styrene strips.
The bussard collector was crafted from styrene strips and putty.

The pylons were made from styrene strips and sheet styrene. The grid
lines were done with tape and primer. The tiny running light was made
from a micro-scale rivet head.
