This is how Tim sculpted the original pattern pieces for the Defiant Starship!
|
This page is a little different from the others. For some reason, some
people still think Tim's Defiant, which he sculpted for Spaceboy Productions,
is just a casting off of the Hallmark ornament. The original Spaceboy
Defiant was, indeed, a casting of a slightly modified ornament. The
new one Tim did for him, however, was so heavily re-worked (and in most
cases re-sculpted) that it resulted in an 80% new sculpt. Usually the
people who perpetuate the misinformation don't even have one
of our kits! In any case, here is a comparison of the Hallmark ornament
versus the one Tim did. These are under construction pictures so the
detail level will vary.

The main hull of Tim's started with a casting from Spaceboy's original. The shuttle was immediately cut out and discarded as it was totally inaccurate in shape. The surface details were stripped off and the hull cut into pieces to allow for the step down that appears in the Defiant's hull about half-way from the front. The panel lines were also filled in and completely re-scribed to be narrower, thinner and most importantly, accurate! The eight plasma cooling vents have not yet been removed, but will be. The new ones were made from a section of toy railroad car wheels. |

This shows how much was cut off of and removed from the original hull.
Note the re-positioning of and additions to the panel lines. Windows
will later be added to the inner edge by drilling with a micro-sized
drill bit..

|
|
Tim also added the slight bevel that runs around the front, bottom edge
of the hull. Note the styrene pieces that replace the casting's detail.
This picture shows it in the still early stages.

|
|
The rear of the hull was replaced with longer, more accurate back sections.
|
|
|
Tim's engine is slightly larger and fits more accurately to the contours
of the hull. The details on the engine in this picture are masked off
for painting. Additional details, such as the phasers, were sculpted
from styrene and added later. The front of the engines were also resculpted
to be more accurate.
